The decision to legalize marijuana may seem controversial, but marijuana has been used for centuries. The Chinese were first to discover marijuana's medicinal benefits. The first written record of marijuana was a reference made by Emperor Fu Hsi nearly five thousand years ago. He stated that Ma, the Chinese word for Cannabis, possessed both yin and yang. It would take another 2000 years before Jamestown settlers brought marijuana to the Americas. And most have heard the stories about some of the founding fathers growing marijuana plants.

It wasn't until the 20th century that the drug became known for recreational use. Controversy soon followed and politicians acted with force. The decades long war on drugs began. It took decades for medicinal marijuana to be used again. Of course, dispensaries in California became ubiquitous. And then a watershed moment: Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana.
